Building on Studio P3’s earlier involvement with the Crown Solicitors Office, including the completion of its Elizabeth Street premises in 2019, the next chapter called for a workplace capable of responding to a changing legal profession.
Working in a 50:50 partnership with Davenport Campbell to create a unique collaboration model titled DCP3 the team developed a 4,300 sqm workplace across three interconnected floors — creating what was positioned as Australia’s first legal hybrid workplace environment.
The brief was to move beyond a conventional legal workplace and establish a more flexible platform that supported both the functional demands of legal practice and the changing needs of its people. The design solution places Directors at the heart of divisional neighbourhoods, providing clear anchors and points of connection while allowing teams greater flexibility in how and where they work. Focus work and acoustic performance were identified as critical success factors, resulting in a high allocation of enclosed focus rooms alongside spaces for collaboration, connection and informal exchange.
The specialised requirements of legal practice are integrated seamlessly into the workplace. Level 2 incorporates approximately 600 sqm of secured mediation space, while virtual court and virtual mediation facilities support the increasing digitalisation of legal proceedings. An evolved application of SCEC requirements provides the necessary security across the three-floor workplace envelope without compromising the broader workplace experience. Employee wellbeing was equally central to the design. Wellness and retreat spaces provide opportunities to step away from the intensity of the workplace, with careful consideration given to neurodiverse employees and the different ways people experience and navigate their environment. Base building modifications also introduced all-gender bathrooms on each floor, reinforcing a more inclusive workplace model.
Sustainability was embedded within the project, with 6 Star Green Star rating targeted, alongside a broader focus on creating a high-performing and future-ready workplace.
The successful collaboration between Studio P3 and Davenport Campbell demonstrates the value of a shared design model — bringing together complementary expertise to deliver a complex workplace that balances security, performance, technology and human experience.
